I'm going to have to agree...

"I'm one who has been very critical of Obama. He promised change, but has been far too willing to accommodate the prevailing status quo. He has disappointed, by raising expectations and failing to deliver, as in the fight for universal healthcare, which he could have delivered; as in the battle to increase taxes on the very rich, which he could have pushed through with the support of most Americans. If I had to choose one person who is responsible for the rise of the Occupy movement, it would be Obama.

I suppose this is another instance of the heritage of racism--a deeply admirable man, with the right instincts, superb intelligence, and deep sympathy for the plight of the typical American--has been reluctant to fight for what he knows is right, because he understands the depth of American racism and the power it still wields among the ignorant. A vigorous, combative black president is still not acceptable.

That said--NOT ONE of the Republican candidates is worthy to stand on the same stage as Obama. That he is a better human than they are is transparently--blatantly--obvious. Those who profess to be conservative Christians, it seems to me, have abandoned the fundamental principles of Christianity. They surrender compassion when it conflicts with ethnic stereotypes. I would be proud to vote for Obama over ANY Republican candidate.

And the Times is currently asking if there is any virtue to calling out lies. This miserable country; we the people deserve better." - NY Times user comment

Anecdotally, I happened to be in Washington D.C. a couple summers ago during a huge Tea Party rally and I couldn't help but notice that subtle racism, outright ignorance ...and patriotic bald eagle t-shirts were alive and well in certain segments of the population.

Bonne année et bonne santé!

As opposed to the Mayans, I have a more hopeful outlook for 2012 (and the years thereafter). But in the off-chance that they are correct - eat, drink and celebrate a little more just in case ;)

Wishing all of you a Happy New Year!
